Project
Gender Relations and Vulnerability amongst Rural Communities in South Africa; How do Men and Women Cope with Food Security Shortfalls?
The research project aims at providing an insight on the gendered roles and responsibilities, how these affect ownership and control of key livelihood assets, as well as their causal relationship with men's and women's ability to cope with food crisis- i.e. their vulnerability context. Gender is used as an analytical concept that captures the socially constructed roles and identities that are associated with being a man or a woman. Gender as defined above has a profound impact on the distribution of resources and responsibilities of man and women, thus affecting people’s livelihoods and hence their ability to cope with food security shortfalls. The study makes a comparative analysis of men and women’s vulnerability, which is useful in ensuring that food security programming addresses the needs of both groups, equally. The study makes use of the Coping Strategy Index (CSI) (Maxwell, 1996; Maxwell et.al.,1999), to quantify the varying degrees of vulnerability among men and women.
